Carson Desrosiers Committment Roundup

Yesterday afternoon, multiple reports surfaced confirmed that center Carson Desrosiers would be transferring to the Providence Friars. Coming over from Wake Forest, the big man would be eligible to play for the 2013-2014 season.

Here is what was said around the web.

GoLocalProv: Friars finally get a big man – more on the way?

Desrosiers said via Twitter earlier Tuesday “Excited to be a new member of Friartown! Go Friars.” He also told zagsblog.com via text message that he will “bring a different look at the five man than what PC has had in the past,” Desrosiers said. “I will be able to spread the floor to open up the paint as well as post up. I will be a presence in the paint defensively.”

Friar Basketball: 13 Things You Should Know about Carson Desrosiers

Desrosiers is a skilled seven footer with range beyond the three point arc and better than average ball skills for a big man. Listed at 210 pounds heading into college, Wake Forest had him at 240 this past season. Like many high school seven footers, Desrosiers was a skinny kid coming out of school, but what made him unique was a strong lower body. He’ll have to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, which may benefit him in the long term as he’ll have a full season to work on not only his game, but his strength. He’s a good, not great, shooter and a solid passer for a player his size. The hope is that he can round into a more versatile big, one capable of being a presence on the glass with additional strength training. Put simply, Providence is happy to take a seven footer with two years of ACC experience and his skill set. He’s a face-up big man, not the traditional low post banger, who will have two years of eligibility at PC.

Woonsocket Call: McGair: Friars look to max every ounce out of Desrosiers’ 7-foot frame

As the newest Providence College player at Ed Cooley’s disposal, Desrosiers automatically adds credibility to a Friar frontline that is crying out for size. In compliance with NCAA transfer rules, Desrosiers will sit out the 2012-13 season, which should hopefully allow him ample time to study and comprehend Cooley’s defensive philosophy.

As ESPN.com senior basketball recruiting analyst Dave Telep noted in an email, “Desrosiers has two things that work: size and skill. I think if he comes in and gives (the Friars) good effort on the glass he should be a starter in the frontcourt. This next opportunity will be successful if he commits to getting on the glass.”

College Basketball Talk: Providence lands Wake Forest transfer Carson Desrosiers

Perhaps more important for Providence is that Cooley has landed another local star. Dunn is a native of New London, CT, while Ledo is from Providence. Desrosiers is from Windham, NH. Given that Cooley is, himself, a local product — he’s a native of Providence — it gives some hope to Friar fans.

ESPN Boston: Carson Desrosiers transferring to PC

The 6-foot-11 Windham, N.H. resident led Central Catholic to MIAA Division 1 state championships in 2008 and 2010, before moving on to Wake Forest. In two seasons in Winston-Salem, he averaged 4.4 points and 3.7 rebounds, with 38 starts, and totaled 112 blocks. His 52 blocks in 2010-11 were the most by a Wake freshman since Tim Duncan.

Transfer Talk Part Deux: The Sequel

Dr. Dre’s Detox album. Half-Life 3. Sin City 2. These are just a few of the sequels that will probably never come to pass. But after much delay, part two of Transfer Talk will (thankfully) not be in the company of these mythos.

Hopefully it won't be in the company of this P.O.S. either.

A lot has happened since part one. Bryce Cotton was rumored to be leaving the Friars thanks to some dumb-dumb with a keyboard. Then we supposedly lost Lee Goldsbrough. Then a potential transfer committed to Maryland. Then we lost out on Orlando Sanchez to St. John’s. Then I managed to cause uproar over the title of an article (and in the process wrote one of the most successful articles in the history of both Scout Friars and my budding journalism career). But that’s all in the past because reinforcements are on the way and here, now, in part two, we’re talking about them! Read the rest of this entry »

Big Man on Campus?

On Tuesday night via Twitter we learned that 7’0” Sergej Vucetic was slated to visit Ed Cooley and Providence on Monday.  Judging from some of the Twitter response, like many I was intrigued by a seven-foot prospect but wholly unfamiliar with this player out of AIM Prep in Michigan by way of Serbia.

7'0, 230-pound C Sergej Vucetic (2012) of Aim Prep (MI) will visit Providence on Monday.

Given Vucetic’s Serbian roots I reached out to Rafal Juc of Eurohopes.com in the hope of learning more about him because no one has the European hoops scene covered better than Rafal.  Please do yourself a favor and follow him on Twitter (@rafjuc) and check him out at Eurohopes.com.  Rafal was gracious enough not only to provide me with some personal insight but also reached out to a contact in Serbia who has seen a lot of Vucetic in the last year and passed along what he had to say.

As far as college interest Vucetic holds offers from the Friars, URI, Minnesota Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, UNC Charlotte, Nevada and Illinois.

Vucetic has enjoyed great success over the past year.  The biggest eye popper is that he has drawn comparisons to Pau Gasol because of the perimeter skills and agility he possesses for a player of his size.  Vucetic is estimated to stand approximately 7’2” in sneakers and is described as a “really good rebounder” due to his length and body control..  He can also score inside but needs to work on the technical aspects of post play, such as his footwork, and needs to get stronger.   As you will see in the videos included with this post, Vucetic definitely needs work on his body and Rafal believes his offensive game needs significant improvement if he is to be a difference maker at the Big East level. Rafal suggested a red shirt year would do Vucetic well if he goes the high major route, but even with that he is not sure if Vucetic projects to an impact Big East starter.

Vucetic recently played in the Northwest Indiana All-Star Classic and I found some video (below).  It is over 30 minutes long but Vucetic flashes some of his abilities right away so check it out for a few minutes.  Also appearing in the game is another person of Friar interest, shooting guard Mislav Brzoja.

This is a shorter video of Sergej Vucetic training session.

Dunn and Ledo on ESPNU

During last night’s Signing Day Special on ESPNU, Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn had a nice spot to go along with their in studio passing and fake shooting. A little tease before we seem them play together in the Jordan Classic this weekend if you will.

Bryce Cotton Staying!

This certainly has been an eventful few weeks involving quick re-verbals, players officially leaving, and one seemingly transferring only to remain a Friar 24 hours later like Bryce Cotton.

According to Kevin McNamara of the Projo, Cotton is staying.

“I am fully committed to our basketball program and I am excited about the direction the program is headed in. I am looking forward to continuing my education and graduating from Providence College,” Cotton said in a statement released by the school.

Hours before this was posted, Cotton’s mentor Chad Groth (who broke the news originally that Cotton asked for his release) was still painting PC and Ed Cooley in a bad light. Sounds like Groth is indicating that Cooley is holding Cotton hostage, but it’s hard to tell what his motives are at this point.

Here were some of his his latest tweets.

“If a player don’t want to play for a coach, RELEASE HIM don’t hold him back and try to convince him otherwise.”

“COLLEGE PLAYERS: Never play for a coach that doesn’t recruit you.”

“Providence basketball has a lot of drama.”

One thing he is right about though, is that there is a lot of drama around Providence College basketball.

Ian Baker Pulls a Quick Ledo, Committed to Friars Once Again

Point guard Ian Baker has once again committed to the Friars according to his AAU coach. Baker gave a verbal a few weeks ago, but ended up thinking twice about it by doing such crazy things as “visiting Seton Hall”. If you voluntarily hit up South Orange, you mean business. Anyways, according to Adam Zagoria he will play for the Friars next year. I’ll wait until he officially signs.

The news comes hours after all the Bryce Cotton transferring drama. Are the two events related?

Bryce Cotton Transferring. Nooooooo!!

"I can shoot a three like this, and it would go in. True story"

Will there be any Friars left when the season starts next year? In very surprising news, Chad Groth of Area Codes Basketball on Twitter said that Bryce Cotton got his release and will be transferring out of PC. A very sad day in Friartown, as I LOVED Ice Cotton and thought he was going to be a nice role player for the team next year. He seemed like a great kid, and I thought he bought into the Ed Cooley system. Maybe he found a new place to play 39 minutes a game and shoot whenever he wanted? With the great incoming class, Cotton’s minutes were sure to take a big hit. However, with the depth issues the team saw last year, the minutes were going to be important despite being less. Hopefully we’ll find out more on why Bryce decided to leave.

With Ian Baker now being on the fence coming to PC, Ed Cooley has Vincent Council, Kris Dunn, Ricky Ledo, and Josh Fortune at the guard position, with Kiwi Gardner also in limbo.  Council would be the only one who has played any BIG EAST minutes. While the Friars have three great guards (assuming Ledo qualifies), depth is once again a concern. Oh, and there’s still no other big men officially coming yet.

We’ll miss you Ice. Best of luck wherever you land.

BREAKING NEWS: Bryce Cotton gets his release today from Providence. Cotton is a soph PG from Tucson, AZ.

Ian Baker Not Committed to PC According to His AAU Coach

Several weeks ago, Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal reported that Ian Baker had committed to the Friars. In the article, his high school coach Rex Morgan was quoted as saying Baker accepted PC’s offer. Well Baker’s AAU coach Antwain Tennell thinks the recruitment is still open, and seems to be right. The PG was apparently at Seton Hall visiting this weekend. What is in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here?

Per DH Warriors AAU Coach Antwain Tennell, Ian Baker is not committed to Providence. Baker did visit Seton Hall this past wkend.

Update: According to a @ZagsBlog tweet, his AAU coach said Baker is still leaning towards PC.
